A maverick is a type of employee companies might have. It is important to know how to manage a maverick in order to have a successful team. The term maverick comes from Samuel Maverick, a western rancher who refused to brand his cattle. Therefore, the term now means someone who is outside of normal parameters. Typically a maverick will do something to suit themselves, often being stubborn and not always part of the team.
In most companies there is at least one maverick. This is not always a bad thing. It is possible to manage these individuals correctly. The key is to not get frustrated with the difficult and hard employee, but to provide the person with the ability to use their special talents.
