Design Thinking

In business and innovation there are several methods of thinking that help create a new product or service.  Consumers require a solution to their needs, which is what innovation will offer. One type of thinking that will help in this process is called “design thinking.”  Design thinking is a process for practical and creative resolution of a problem or issue.  The concept allows for a person or business group to look for improved results for the future of a product or service.

Design thinking requires a creative process with empathy and rational thinking behind the overall process.  It is unlike analytical thinking, which is quite common in a business setting.  Design thinking allows a build up of ideas rather than breaking down the problem looking for a solution.

In this process of thinking there is less set up for failure or even judgment.  The process encourages input and participation to create the ideas.  Another concept for thinking has been “thinking outside the box.”  This process is when a person looks outside normal avenues of finding a solution to find the one that best fits.  In design thinking architecture, design, and anthropology concepts are used as a paradigm.  Basically the design thinkers look to characterizing the human aspect of companies to create the best answer to the solution.  The process has seven stages that lead to innovative ideas.  These include define, research, ideate, prototype, chose, implement, and learn from the thinking process.  The problem is framed up so that the right questions can be asked.
