Developmental pediatrics is a concept dealing with children. Children can have developmental issues or develop just fine. However, those in developmental pediatrics will diagnose children that have issues in their development. Developmental pediatrics specialists will look at neurodevelopment, neurological disabilities, and other development delays a child might have.
Developmental pediatrics examines what could be the cause of the developmental issue. For example an infant that has Down syndrome may not show too many symptoms, but specialists can determine how severe the Down syndrome is likely to be based on certain neurological readings. Birth defects, premature infants and other children that display issues have to be seen by developmental pediatrics specialists to determine what course of treatment is needed. Sometimes treatment is not possible, but in many cases there are things that can be done making this an innovative field.
